A high-altitude, car-free resort in the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area.
At a glance
Ski-in, ski-out access to one of the biggest linked ski areas in France, the Portes du Soleil.
Modern resort filled with fun amenities, including the Aquariaz Water Centre – a tropical jungle full of waterfalls and slides.
Horse-drawn sleighs are the best way to get around this snowy, car-free Alpine town.
A purpose-built resort in the Portes du Soleil ski area, Avoriaz has excellent access to over 650km of varied skiing. The number of blue and red runs make this a top choice for intermediate skiers, and there aren’t many drag lifts around so boarders especially love it too. Park fans can show of their moves in any of the 11 snow parks dotted around. And you can even ski over the border into Switzerland.
Avoriaz itself is a pretty unique place to stay. It’s full of tall buildings with slanted roofs and diagonal walls, covered in wooden shingles, which are meant to mirror the natural shape of the surrounding mountains. There’s loads of self-catering accommodation here, which makes it a favourite with families. And the streets are car-free and snowy, so you can ski right back to a lot of the door at a lot of them.
Away from the slopes, you can play in a tropical jungle full of waterfalls and slides at the Aquariaz water park. Or get your après on at La Folie Douce, the slopeside bar famous for afternoon parties, DJs and dancing.
