Walking Excursions

Kranjska Gora and Lake Jasna

Distance: Four and a quarter kilometres
Gradient: 20 metres
Level of difficulty: Easy
Approximate time: One-and-a-half to two hours

Setting off from Kranjska Gora, this walk along the shore of Lake Jasna will allow you to get your bearings in this picturesque setting. The beautiful waters of the lake are a reminder of its name – 'Jasna' means clear in Slovenian – and its setting is equally charming, with distant mountain views and wooded surroundings.

Martuljek Peaks and waterfalls

Distance: Five-and-a-half kilometres
Gradient: 200 metres
Level of difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous
Approximate time: Three to four hours

The Martuljek peaks lie in the Triglav National Park. Today, this panoramic walk takes you to a small gorge and waterfalls that lie under the north face of Mount Špik. This famous peak is one of around 400 that lie within the Park, easily spotted by its distinctive pyramid-shaped outline that pierces the skyline. This walk is fairly challenging in places. After walking along a mountain path, passing a canyon and crossing bridges, you'll reach the waterfall. You’ll also be able to enjoy wonderful mountain views.

Sleme Peak

Distance: 10 kilometres Gradient: 300 metres Level of difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous Approximate time: Four to five hours

This walk leads to Sleme peak, arguably the best viewpoint of the Julian Alps. Your walk starts at the Vrsic Pass, which lies at an altitude of 1611 metres and is the highest pass in the country. From here you’ll walk to Sleme with its wonderful views of snow-capped Alpine peaks, before descending back to Vrsic.

Krnica Valley

Distance: 10 kilometres
Gradient: 303 metres
Level of difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous
Approximate time: Four to five hours

Explore the beautiful Krnica Valley and enjoy its mountain views, as you set off today from Kranjska Gora and head for the mountain foothills. You'll follow a track between Lake Jasna and the Pisnica river, over uneven terrain and grassland, passing woods and meadows as you walk along the mountain foothills.

Three Borders Peak

Distance: Six kilometres
Gradient: 437 metres
Level of difficulty: Strenuous
Approximate time: Four to five hours

This is the most challenging walk of the week so please speak to your host if you have any doubts as to its suitability for you.

The road pass (1073 metres) heading to Austria is the starting point for a hike between rich forest on an old military footpath used for border control during the Yugoslav Federation. After several zig-zags you climb to the top of the Karavanke Mountains ridge. This ridge is part of the 120-kilometre Karavanke mountain chain which runs along the Slovenia and Austrian borders. Here, at Pec viewpoint, you’ll be able to enjoy panoramic views over the countryside where the borders of Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet (1510 metres). The descent leads you a different way to the village of Ratece, with a short stop in a mountain hut en route.

Please note

Walks are up to 12 kilometres long, over moderate to strenuous terrain. Some sections are challenging with ascents and descents over uneven ground.

Please note: Kranjska Gora lies at 810 metres above sea level, the highest point reached during walks is 1504 metres above sea level. A good level of fitness is required.
