Holiday Information

Head to the Baltic aboard Balmoral and take the chance to explore a selection of the region’s most absorbing cities in the autumn, a time of the year when this incredible part of the world is less crowded but no less rewarding.

Balmoral
Balmoral

Before venturing into the Baltic you’ll spend two days in Scandinavia, taking in the highlights of cultural cities in Sweden and Denmark. Up first is Gothenburg – Sweden’s welcoming second city – where an eclectic mix of attractions await, including Götaplatsen Square; the traditional wooden houses of the historic Haga district; and Maritiman, the world’s largest floating ship museum. Copenhagen has much to discover during your day in the Danish capital too, from the Little Mermaid statue and pretty Nyhavn waterfront district to the National Museum of Denmark and impressive Christiansborg and Amalienborg palaces. Tivoli Gardens – one of the world’s oldest amusement parks – is a ‘must-visit’. Fairytale-esque Tallinn – the magical capital of Estonia – will welcome you to the Baltic in style. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the best-preserved in Europe and a wonderland of striking architectural wonders, including the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Toompea Castle, fascinating museums and fine examples of Hanseatic merchants’ houses. Kadriorg Palace is well worth a look too during your full day here.

Balmoral will then sail to the seaside city of Helsinki. Surrounded by lush, leafy parks and tranquil lakes and packed with attractions, the Finnish capital is sure to capture your imagination. You may choose to tour the captivating city centre, stopping by highlights such as Senate Square, the National Museum and the Kamppi Chapel of Silence to name just a few; or opt to uncover the unspoilt natural beauty of the city’s scenery before continuing onwards to Russia. Once docked in stunning St Petersburg, you could see the sights up-close on a fascinating guided tour of the city, taking in ‘must-visit’ landmarks such as Peterhof Palace and The Church of Our Saviour on the Spilled Blood. You could also stop by the remarkable Hermitage; marvel at the jewelled eggs on display at the Fabergé Museum; and experience a magical evening at the Russian ballet too. En route back to Newcastle, Balmoral will return to Scandinavia to cap-off your incredible cruise with a call into Oslo. Take the day to discover the Vigeland and Ekeberg sculpture parks; see Edvard Munch’s The Scream at the National Museum of Art; or perhaps visit Akershus Fortress before enjoying a relaxing sail home.

Please note, this is an adult only sailing (18+).

Itinerary

Sat 6 Oct - Newcastle, United Kingdom

Depart from Newcastle

Mon 8 Oct - Gothenburg, Sweden

Situated on Sweden’s west coast, the laid-back seaport of Gothenburg has considerable appeal for any visitor. Known as one of the friendliest cities in Europe, Gothenburg – Sweden’s second largest city – offers a vibrancy and fascination through its galleries, museums, boutiques, street cafes and Scandinavia’s largest and most popular amusement park, Lisberg, which has themed rides, performance venues and a landscaped sculpture garden.

Tue 9 Oct - Copenhagen, Denmark

With its vibrant atmosphere, modern culture and beautiful architecture, Copenhagen is the essence of Scandinavian cool. One of Europe's oldest and most popular cities, Copenhagen is also one of the cleanest and most cosmopolitan. Its narrow streets are always busy with welcoming locals and are lined with colourful cafes, bars, shops and places to eat. Its bridges ring with cycling commuters and the pristine waterways make visiting this city a wonderful experience.

Thu 11 Oct - Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea, is unquestionably one of Europe's most magical capitals. This ancient Hanseatic city is justifiably proud of its beautiful churches, solid limestone houses and well-preserved cobbled streets.

Fri 12 Oct - Helsinki, Finland

Finland's capital since 1812, built on a peninsula amid a cluster of islands, stately Helsinki is The Daughter of the Baltic. This striking seaside port is surrounded by uplifting natural landscapes that are easily accessible from each area of the city. The opportunities to get out and about includes boating around the archipelago islands, hiking Helsinki’s forests or strolling its beaches, smart parks and gardens.

The port also boasts a UNESCO-listed sea fortress just a short distance from the shore, which is worth the short ferry journey to explore its historic walls and gates.

Sat 13 Oct - St Petersburg, Russia

The jewel in the Baltic crown and Russia's most European city, elegant St Petersburg was the imperial capital for two centuries, and Tsar Peter the Great's 'Window on the West'. The sheer grandeur of the city, and its revolutionary spirit, never fail to impress.

Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great – immortalised by the city's iconic Bronze Horseman statue – St Petersburg remains Russia's cultural centre. The Mariinsky Theatre hosts world-class opera and ballet, and the State Russian Museum showcases a wide collection of superb Russian art.

St Petersburg is utterly captivating, with baroque palaces, wide elegant streets, ornate bridges and broad curving canals – the city is built on 40 islands at the mouth of the River Neva. The main street, Nevsky Prospekt, is 5km long and lined with cafés, bars and restaurants mixed in with upmarket hotels and sumptuous shops.

On Neva embankment, the Winter Palace, with over a thousand rooms, is the most magnificent of six buildings that make up the Hermitage Museum. It is one of 125 museums and galleries, including the imposing seafront Peterhof Royal Palace and Park. The city is enchanting during the “White Nights” of midsummer, when a brief twilight blends into dawn, and street entertainment lasts throughout the long days and short, white nights.

Sun 14 Oct - St Petersburg, Russia

Wed 17 Oct - Oslo, Norway

Oslo, the capital and largest city of Norway, is one of Scandinavia’s most historic, interesting and welcoming destinations. Surrounded by mountains and its own fjord, this compact and cultured city is both easy and fun to explore on foot

Fri 19 Oct - Newcastle, United Kingdom

Balmoral

Refurbished in 2017, Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1,350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

Balmoral is named after the Scottish residence of the British Royal Family, and the Scottish theme runs throughout the main dining venues – the Ballindalloch, Avon and Spey – where guests can enjoy tantalising menus prepared by expert chefs.

Featuring 710 well-appointed rooms and suites and a selection of comfortable lounges, bars and inviting public areas which have been extensively refitted and improved as part of a fleet-wide refurbishment programme, Balmoral provides guests with ample space in which to relax and share a memorable cruise experience with hundreds, not thousands, of fellow travellers. And, as guests have come to expect, there is always an array of superb entertainment on offer throughout the day, from lectures and hobby classes to live cabaret and comedians, ensuring you can make the most of your time on board.
