Balmoral
Balmoral

Relax on board your ship during an overnight sail from Newcastle before your exploration of the awe-inspiring Norwegian fjords starts with a glide along the glassy waters of Lysefjord; a feat only possible for smaller ships. Dramatic cliffs, magnificent mountains and mysterious rock formations dominate the idyllic Lysefjord; the scenery on display here is sure to captivate you. A day in Eidfjord begins the following morning.

This picturesque village, situated within the farthest reaches of Hardangerfjord, is encompassed by spectacular landscapes; taking a kayaking tour here is a unique way to marvel at the soaring peaks and towering cliff faces. On tours from Eidfjord, the Vøringsfossen – one of Norway’s most famous waterfalls – and the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, which offers a fascinating insight into Norway’s natural environment, are within reach too.

After departing Eidfjord in the evening via Hardangerfjord – Norway’s second longest fjord – and diverting into Ulvikafjord to see lush-green valleys and mighty mountain peaks, you’ll finally cruise overnight to Bergen. Once docked in Norway’s vibrant second city you’ll have a full-day to explore this Hanseatic gem at leisure. Many highlights await your discovery; among the best of the city’s attractions are the world-famous, UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, the traditional fish market and the Troldhaugen Museum. The Troldhaugen is the former home of Edvard Grieg and now dedicated to celebrating the life and works of the legendary Norwegian composer. Whatever you choose to see and do, be sure to take in Bergen’s gorgeous scenery from the top of majestic Mount Fløyen – reached via the funicular railway – to round off your holiday with yet another unforgettable experience.

Itinerary

Fri 23 Aug - Newcastle, United Kingdom

Depart from Newcastle

Sat 24 Aug - Cruising Lysefjord, Norway

The Lysefjord is a stunning example of the Norwegian fjords' spectacular natural beauty. Carved into the landscape by glacier movement in the Ice Age approximately 10,000 years ago, Lysefjord is lined by magnificent mountains and dramatic cliff faces – some soaring over 1,000 metres high into the unpolluted skies above.

Sun 25 Aug - Eidfjord, Norway

The picturesque village of Eidfjord, set within the breath-taking Hardangerfjord, is a gateway to some of the region's most spectacular natural features and possibly the most beautiful place in the Norwegian fjords. Located beneath a back-drop of soaring, snow-peaked mountains, engraved with rivers and waterfalls, Eidfjord begs for exploration and presents some of the fjordland's greatest photo opportunities The village’s tranquil feel extends to the lush fields that run for miles, meandering through clusters of wood-slat homes in ice-cream hues.

Sun 25 Aug - Cruising Ulvikafjord, Norway

Situated at the northern end of the Hardangerfjord – Norway’s second longest fjord – Ulvikafjord is surrounded by soaring mountains and lush-green valleys, and leads to the beautiful village of Ulvik. Be sure to have your camera to hand to take advantage of the fantastic photo opportunities as your ship slices through the still blue waters of the fjord.

Sun 25 Aug - Cruise Hardangerfjord, Norway

Known as the queen of the Fjord, Hardangerfjord is situated centrally in the heart of Western Norway. The best way to experience this incredible Fjord is to sail along the 197 kilomteres, enjoying the spellbinding scenery, towering mountains, waterfalls and idyllic orchards.

Mon 26 Aug - Bergen, Norway

Seven hills and seven fjords frame Hanseatic Bergen, a city steeped in maritime heritage. Of Bergen’s many attractions, the 900-year-old UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf is a standout highlights. A delight to explore, the Bryggen's cobbled stairways are lined with traditional half-timbered buildings and climb away from the waterfront, leading to curious open spaces that are often overflowing with colourful flowers that perfume the air.

Bergen has a vibrant fish market and hosts one of Norway's biggest cultural events of the year, the Bergen International Festival. The city was once the home of Norway's most famous composer, Edvard Grieg, and the Troldhaugen Museum is devoted to his life’s work.

Not to be missed is a chance to ride the Funicular Railway to the top of Mount Fløyen, offering spectacular panoramic views of Bergen and its scenic surroundings.

Wed 27th Aug - Newcastle, UK

Balmoral

Refurbished in 2017, Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1,350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

Balmoral is named after the Scottish residence of the British Royal Family, and the Scottish theme runs throughout the main dining venues – the Ballindalloch, Avon and Spey – where guests can enjoy tantalising menus prepared by expert chefs.

Featuring 710 well-appointed rooms and suites and a selection of comfortable lounges, bars and inviting public areas which have been extensively refitted and improved as part of a fleet-wide refurbishment programme, Balmoral provides guests with ample space in which to relax and share a memorable cruise experience with hundreds, not thousands, of fellow travellers. And, as guests have come to expect, there is always an array of superb entertainment on offer throughout the day, from lectures and hobby classes to live cabaret and comedians, ensuring you can make the most of your time on board.
