Dénia, Costa Blanca
Set at the foot of the Montgó mountains beneath a ruined 12th-century castle, charming Denia has more character than most of the resorts along this stretch of coast. Yet it still retains its provincial charm as a thriving fishing port. You can enjoy strolls to the bustling harbour, visit seafood restaurants, or explore Mount Montgó National Park, where there are many well-marked walking routes. Perhaps visit the Monday market for a few souvenirs too.
Visit Jávea, a small town that is in two parts. The old quarter stands on high ground at the foot of the Montgó mountain range, and has a 14th-century Gothic fortified church. The modern resort area has grown up around the harbour and sandy beach.
The seaside town of Calpe is overlooked by the towering Penon de Ifach, a huge grantite rock that soars some 600 metres high.
