Majorca's capital city, Palma, is set in the centre of the wide Bay of Palma on the south coast of the island. Steeped in history the Roman remains are still being discovered of the Roman City of Palmaria which was founded around 120BC from which Palma takes its name.
A popular calling point for cruise ships and expensive yachts, Palma is a vibrant cosmopolitan city full of history and culture. Palma is often overlooked as a short city break but easily compares with Barcelona for a sophisticated, interesting destination full of art and culture.
Things to do in Palma
Most of the old town of Palma is pedestrianised leaving you free to wander around the many shops and boutiques whilst admiring the varied architecture. A holiday to Palma will let you enjoy some of the best restaurants on the island of Majorca with a wide variety of International cuisine to choose from.
Sightseeing in Palma is easily done on foot, whether wondering along the alleyways in the ancient Arab quarter or strolling along the tree-lined promenades of La Rambla. Give your feet a rest and catch the sightseeing bus which regularly runs around Palma allowing you to get off and on wherever you like.
Something a little different?
Whilst on holiday in Palma, why not catch the old train to Soller? This narrow gauge railway has been operating since 1912 and has remained unchanged for all those years. The old carriages transport you from the streets of Palma through some of Majorca's beautiful scenery, to Soller in the north. From the town of Soller it is easy to catch the tram down to the lovely Puerto Soller.
