Melissi Beach

Ayia Napa, Cyprus

from £

The interiors here are really 21st-century. The all-marble lobby is decked out with cubist sofas in a modern red-and-black colour scheme. And the freshly-revamped rooms are done out in off-white and cool grey, with recessed mood lighting.

The hotel sidles up against Ayia Napa’s stretch of golden sand. The lively town centre is close, too – just a five-minute stroll from the front door.

The main pool is a huge, lagoon-like number, surrounded by loungers and palm trees. Then there’s the brand-new adults-only pool with a swim-up bar in the centre, and another separate pool for children.

Where the pool terrace ends, the sand begins. To add to the poolside snack bar, a new bar has just opened on the beach. So you’ll never have far to go for drinks or light bites.

Big buffet spreads are the order of the day in the restaurant. At dinnertimes, the menu is themed, so you may see Italian food on offer one day, and local Cypriot dishes the next.

The sea-facing pool bar becomes a Cypriot taverna come sundown. Elsewhere, you can get a discount at the Mezepolis restaurant*, which serves traditionally-prepared local dishes just a few steps from the hotel.

Younger guests can make friends in the hotel-run kids’ club, which also has a playground. Elsewhere, there are spots to play tennis, ping pong and in-water games like polo are often organised.

Down on the beach, you can sign up to watersports* including banana boat rides and jet-skiing.

An after-dark agenda sees mini-discos and magic shows take place, as well as performances from folk dancers and live singers. Everything is staged in the lobby bar, where you can order drinks in view of the ocean.

You can go for a candle-lit massage in the hotel’s spa*, which also houses a beauty and hairdressing salon. If you want to work out, there’s a well-equipped gym.
