Tamarindo Diria

Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica

from £

This hotel has been welcoming guests for 40 years. The secret to its success? A beachfront setting, a central location and service with a smile.

A SNAPSHOT
This family-run hotel is something of a Tamarindo institution. Built about 40 years ago, the resort grew up around the hotel, not vice versa. As such it takes pride of place on the white-sand beach – in fact, it’s the only beachfront hotel in the resort. It also benefits from being right in the heart of things – step outside and you’re on the main strip, packed with bars and restaurants.

The hotel is split into three parts. The original main wing is right by the beach. Just across the road there’s a newer section which has two distinct characters – one section welcomes families while the other is a standalone adults-only block. All three elements have their own swimming pools so things always feel nice and relaxed.

POOL SCENE
The original section of the hotel has a small, oblong swimming pool which is just footsteps from the beach. The area is enveloped by palm trees and features a series of statues-come-fountains depicting monkey-like gods.

The new wing of the hotel boasts a large, family-friendly pool surrounded by lawns and tropical greenery. The focal point of the adults-only section is an elegant sun terrace complete with a private pool and swim-up bar*.

FOOD & DRINK
Most guests staying here opt for bed and breakfast but there are 5 restaurants on offer. ‘Matapolo’* is set on a terrace right next to the beach, beneath the canopy of an enormous tree. Specialities include Costa Rican dishes, steak and seafood. There’s also a buffet restaurant that overlooks the sea that serves breakfast and dinner. Just next door to the hotel is a pizzeria called ‘Niri’*, serving delicious wood-fired pizzas. ‘Gallo Fino’* is another option, famous for its roast chicken, while the ‘Flying Bull’ Restaurant* prepares dishes in front of patrons, making use of food grown in the hotel’s garden.

SPORTS & ACTIVITIES
The hotel boasts its own golf driving range* with 8 practice greens, 15 teeing green and a 9-hole putting green. There’s also a tennis court*, while kayaking*, surfing* and boogie boarding* are available down on the beach.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT
The hotel boasts its own casino* if you fancy a flutter. Just across the road, there’s the ‘Tapaz Bar’*, which serves tapas and beers in a relaxed setting. The hotel’s main bar, ‘Media Luna’*, is set on the beach and does a mean line in cocktails. Rounding things off is the ‘Tropicana Chill Out’* – an adults-only bar that stages regular live music.
