Venice is a popular working and tourist city in northern Italy. It is located on the coast and is actually an island that sits parallel to the mainland. Venice is known for its array of canal and bridges and is virtually the same as it was 600 years ago. This romantic city is made up different districts with the most well known being the 118 islands in the main area Sestieri.

Sightseeing in Venice

You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to seeing the sights of Venice. It's a city packed full of fascinating bridges, buildings, squares and canals. Take a Gondola ride along the narrow canal streets. Stop off at Grand Canal, the main city waterway and take a chance to watch daily life going on around you. St Mark's Square is the city's focal point, enjoy a drink as you soak up the Venetian atmosphere.

The Venetian islands, in particular Murano, Burano and Torcello are worth making a trip to. The Murano Glass Factory offers a chance to see famous local glassmakers crafting beads, paperweights and many other beautiful glass objects. On Burano you'll find lace makers creating beautiful needlework alongside Museums housing examples of Venetian and Burano laces.

Culture and history in Venice

A Venice holiday is a perfect destination if you're looking for culture and history in equal measure. Saint Mark's Basilica is one of Venice's most famous churches. It is an excellent example of Byzantine architecture and sits opposite Doge's Palace, once the official residence of the 120 Doges that ruled Venice.

Eating out in Venice

Italy is a dining out nation and holidays to Venice reflects this. The city is filled with hundreds of restaurants offering Venetian classics. Cuttlefish and its distinctive black ink is a Venetian staple and fresh fruit from street sellers is also a popular favourite. Be sure to try the excellent local wines and of course Tiramisu, Venice's most famous dessert.
