Alesund

Ålesund is a bustling port and fascinating seaside town facing the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to the region of outstanding natural beauty and some of Norway’s most dramatic fjords. Due to its position, it enjoys more days of sunshine throughout the year than areas deeper into the fjords.

After a devastating fire in 1904, the town was totally rebuilt in Art Nouveau style, with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments which are still present today. In addition to the many museums, there is a variety of interesting day trips to the surrounding islands and skerries of local fishing communities dating back to the Viking era.

Making an excellent destination in its own right, it is great for a week or long weekend..

Things to do in resort

  • Mount Aksla viewpoint for stunning views over the city
  • Art Nouveau centre museum
  • Fishery museum
  • Picturesque Alnes lighthouse (reached by public transport)
  • Sunnmøre Museum detailing Viking history
  • Boat trips to nearby islands
  • Award winning aquarium
  • Kayaking and cycling
  • Shopping
  • Glass-blowing workshop
  • Cinema
  • Bird-watching at nearby Runde island (Wildlife Sea Safari excursion)

In addition to its many museums and impressive ocean aquarium, holidays in Ålesund offer a variety of interesting day trips to the small islands and skerries of local fishing communities dating back to the Viking era, plus round trips to the famous Geirangerfjord and Sunnmøre Alps.
