Mayrhofen

An established Austrian favourite in the heart of the Tyrol

One of Austria’s best loved resorts, Mayrhofen comes alive in the summer when flowers deck the balconies and the streets are filled with bustling cafés and brass band parades.

It offers an unrivalled range of activities, excursions and events throughout the summer. Situated at the end of the Ziller Valley, there is extensive walking for all levels in 4 local valleys, and the ‘Zillertal Natur’ runs an excellent programme of FREE guided walks. An old-fashioned steam locomotive is a popular way to explore the valley, and in the evenings it is wonderful to sit outside whilst Mayrhofen comes alive with regular live music and traditional festivals.

Penken Lift

The new, state-of-the-art 3S Gondola Penken lift is open from approx 14 May to 09 October. The construction of the new Penkenbahn marks the beginning of a new era in Mayrhofen with a sleek climb up the near-sheer rock face to the top of the mountain, where numerous hiking trails begin. Transporting 32 people per gondola, it has halved the old journey time to a speedy eight minutes and has the convenience of Wi-Fi access.

Things to do in resort

Situated at the end of the Ziller valley, Mayrhofen boasts a wide variety of walks from gentle valley strolls along the Ziller River to steep woodland hikes and beautiful panoramas from the top of the Penken or Ahorn cablecars. Many mountain restaurants offer typical Austrian specialities for a lunchtime treat.

The village is lively and bustling, and with tennis, swimming, adventure sports and even summer skiing on the Hintertux Glacier, Mayrhofen is a wonderful base for an active summer holiday.

The local steam train is a popular way to get up and down the valley and in the evenings there is a variety of live entertainment in the hotels, bars and cafés.

  • Many shops and cafés
  • Alpine and Nordic walking
  • Mountain biking on 800km of trails plus locally guided tours
  • Steam train trips
  • Horse-drawn carriage rides
  • Glacier with ice palace walks
  • Indoor and open-air pools with waterslides
  • Tennis
  • Climbing
  • Fishing
  • Mini-golf
  • Zell am Ziller summer toboggan run
  • E-BIKES available

Walking

Mayrhofen is surrounded by 4 valleys and an incredible 1,700km of walking paths across the Zillertal, ranging from gentle paths through meadows to Schwendau and along the river to Zell am Ziller, to high altitude treks into different valleys.

Popular walking areas

Penken & Ahorn
Both cable-cars open up extensive trails above the village. The Ahorn mountain has a lovely loop walk, daily birds of prey show and barbeque area, as well as some tougher hikes up to the Ahornspitze.

Stillup Valley
A stunningly pretty valley, visitors are rewarded with three waterfalls falling into a turquoise reservoir and a backdrop of snow capped Italian mountains. Access by bus with 2-3 hour walks to huts in the valley basin.

Eagles Valley
So called because of the number of these birds of prey spotted here, fantastic walking via the beautiful hamlet of Brandberg.

Zemmgrund
The ‘gateway to Italy’ with the spectacular ‘Schlegeis’ reservoir at the end and a lovely 2 hour walk into Italy past war time border posts.

Tuxertal
The Hintertux Glacier, with panoramic views, ice palace, 5km of underground ice caves and plenty of marmots and waterfalls!
