South Male Atoll is a cluster of islands within the Maldives that lies just south of the North Male Atoll collection of islands. Separated from North Male Atoll by the Vaadhu Kandu channel, a South Male Atoll holiday offers everything you could want from a secluded getaway destination.
It's made up of 22 islands all of which perfectly fit the paradise stereotype of lush tropical landscape, towering palm trees and soft white sand.
Why visit South Male Atoll?
While North Male Atoll is the busiest area for tourism, a holiday to South Male Atoll is slightly quieter but is known for its fantastic diving.
The atoll has an array of diving sites including Kandooma Point, Vaadhoo Caves and Vaagali Thila, all of which offer once in a life time experiences for holidaymakers. Among the many marine species you're likely to spot are tuna, hammerhead sharks, batfish and manta rays.

But if you want to see more of what the Maldives has to offer then head to the capital island of Male in neighbouring North Male Atoll. Here you can really experience true Maldivian life by wandering amongst the locals. Visit the Friday Mosque; the oldest in the Maldives and for contrast the huge Grand Mosque, which has room for 5000 people.
Eating out in South Male Atoll
Much of the food on the islands is imported but fresh fish and fruits including coconuts are all locally sourced. Maldivian cuisine tends to centre on fish, which is understandable given its location. Sample some of the flavoursome soups and curries made using the daily catch and make sure you try the spiny-backed lobster, a delicious local delicacy on your holiday to South Male Atoll.
